The water is already hot. Somebody just built steps down to it.
Which Pamukkale day trip walks the terraces and which one photographs them from the coach. What a Blue Lagoon slot costs once the transfer is in. Whether the onsen will take you with a tattoo. Reviews of the hot springs and thermal baths you can book.
Four hot springs worth building a trip around.
A palace bath, a white terrace, a volcano sunrise and the lagoon everybody flies for. What each costs, and what the people who got in the water say.

Six countries that heat their own bathwater.
Turkey stacks its springs into white terraces. Iceland pumps them into lagoons. Poland tiles them into mountain bath houses, Indonesia leaves them at the foot of a volcano, Japan built an etiquette around them and New Zealand lets them steam in the street.
Turkey keeps its hot springs on a white cliff, and everybody drives to it.
Pamukkale is the country's thermal event: a terraced limestone hillside you walk barefoot, a Roman spa city on top, and a coach ride from wherever you are staying. Three ways to do it, and what each one costs before the extras.
Iceland heats a lagoon in the middle of a lava field and charges admission.
Blue Lagoon and Sky Lagoon run on timed slots that sell out a season ahead in summer. The Secret Lagoon and the Myvatn baths are cheaper, quieter and further, and half the Golden Circle coaches finish in one of them, which is the cheapest way to combine the two.
Towel, swimsuit, timed slot: what a hot spring asks of you.
Every hot spring trip →
Almost every complaint about a thermal bath is a rental fee nobody mentioned or a slot that sold out. These three decisions cover it: how you get in, how you get there, and what you pay for once you are inside.

Entry ticket, or the guided day
A plain admission ticket is the cheapest way into a famous bath and the easiest to get wrong: the popular slots go early, and a locker, towel and robe are usually charged on top.
The hot springs the most travellers actually get into.
Every hot spring trip we have reviewed →Széchenyi, Pamukkale, Batur, the Icelandic lagoons. The soaks that fill up first, and what earns each of them the slot.

Poland soaks outdoors at minus five and calls it a Tuesday.
Zakopane sits two hours south of Krakow with a row of thermal complexes at the foot of the mountains: heated outdoor pools, slides for the children, saunas for everyone else, and a cable car and a cheese tasting bolted onto most of the day trips.

What getting into hot water actually costs.
Every trip on the site, grouped by price. A public bath house costs less than lunch; a lagoon with a transfer and a ritual is a different budget entirely.
Municipal bath houses, geothermal park entries and the local springs you reach on your own.
The standard day out: a coach, an entry ticket and usually a meal. Pamukkale, Zakopane, Batur.
Iceland with transfers, private onsen days, and the aurora nights that end in a hot pool.

On Bali the soak is the reward for a 4am start.
The Batur trips run the same shape: a head torch up the ridge, sunrise over the caldera, then a hot spring on the lake shore while the rest of the island is still eating breakfast. The jeep versions drive the ridge instead of walking it.
Every volcano hot spring trip →Three kinds of hot water you cannot get anywhere else.
Warm water is warm water. Limestone terraces that build themselves, a lagoon dug into a lava field, and a bathing culture with written rules are not.

The Pamukkale Terraces
Calcium-loaded spring water has been running down this hillside for thousands of years, leaving a white shelf of travertine behind it. You walk the marked channel barefoot, shoes in hand, and the water is shin deep and warm. The Roman spa city of Hierapolis sits on the plateau above, and Cleopatra's Pool, where the columns fell into the water in an earthquake, charges its own entry at the top.

The Geothermal Lagoons
Blue Lagoon, Sky Lagoon, Myvatn, the Secret Lagoon: milky silica water held at body temperature in the middle of a lava field, with the air often near freezing. Entry runs on timed slots booked well ahead, a towel is usually included and a robe usually is not, and the walk from the changing room to the water is the coldest thirty seconds of the trip.

Onsen, and its Rules
You wash before you get in, sitting on a stool at a tap, and the towel never goes into the water. Most baths are separated by sex and taken without a swimsuit, and many still turn away visible tattoos, though private baths and rented family rooms get around that. The reward is a cedar tub outdoors in a mountain town, in the snow if the timing is right.

Four hot springs that will not take a walk-in.
Plenty of thermal water can be found on the day, in a village pool with a turnstile. These four run on timed slots, capped rituals and a season, and they are the ones people fly for.
- 01Golden Circle, Kerid Crater, & Blue Lagoon TourEntry is a timed slot with a cap on each one, and summer afternoons go weeks in advance. Nobody is admitted without a booking.
- 02Sky Lagoon Entrance Pass With 7-Step Spa RitualThe seven-step ritual runs in groups, so the evening slots, the ones that put you in the water at sunset, fill first.
- 03Northern Lights & Chena Hot Springs TourThis one is a season, not a timetable. The aurora runs roughly late August to April, and the coach seats out to the springs are limited every night of it.
- 04Pamukkale Hierapolis and Cleopatra’s Pool Tour with lunch from AntalyaThe pool with the fallen columns charges a separate entry inside the site, and the queue for that desk is what eats an afternoon.
Winter is the season for this, and it books like it.
Steam needs cold air to show. Snow on the deck rail, hair freezing at the ends, minus ten above the shoulders and thirty-eight below them: that is the trip people remember, and it is the one with an aurora forecast attached. The lagoons, the Tatra pools and the northern onsen towns all price accordingly from November.
By place — where you are already going
