Almost every complaint about a thermal bath is a rental fee nobody mentioned or a slot that sold out. These three decisions cover it: how you get in, how you get there, and what you pay for once you are inside.
Entry ticket, or the guided day
A plain admission ticket is the cheapest way into a famous bath and the easiest to get wrong: the popular slots go early, and a locker, towel and robe are usually charged on top.
Most hot springs are a drive
The water is rarely in town. A day trip bundles the coach, the entry and often lunch, which is why an eight-hour Pamukkale run costs less than hiring a car for it.
Mud, silica masks and the massage upsell
The mineral extras are the profit centre. A mud spa or a silica ritual is worth the money at the places built around it; anywhere else it is a queue you pay to stand in.

Onsen, and its Rules
You wash before you get in, sitting on a stool at a tap, and the towel never goes into the water. Most baths are separated by sex and taken without a swimsuit, and many still turn away visible tattoos, though private baths and rented family rooms get around that.
